With mixed weather patterns and a government inventory update only hours away, natural gas futures traded lower early Thursday.

Morning market report

The September Nymex gas futures contract was down 4.0 cents to $2.137/MMBtu at 8:40 a.m. ET. This followed a 2.1-cent loss the previous session. NGI’s Spot Gas National Avg. shed 9.5 cents to $1.530 on Wednesday.

The market was braced for today’s U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) storage report covering the week ended Aug. 16. It was slated for release at 10:30 a.m. ET.
