“Investor confidence has to be reestablished through clear policies and mechanisms that are maintained and upheld over an extended period of time,” Sofía Tamayo Gutiérrez, Institutional Relations & Regulatory Affairs director at Kino Energia told NGI’s Mexico GPI.

“The Southeast Gateway project represents a significant long-term investment for the people of southern Mexico by providing them with a new dedicated gas pipeline featuring state-of-the-art technology for natural gas transportation, while addressing the country’s growing energy demand,” Alexis Milo, one of Mexico’s top economists, told NGI’s Mexico GPI. 

Mexico has enough prospective natural gas resources in its basins to meet the country’s daily demand for the fuel for the next century, according to Commissioner Hector Moreira of the Comisión Nacional de Hidrocarburos (CNH).

“In my point of view, there are three important things that need to be improved in Mexico: innovation, technology and employee security,” Sandra Jahnsen, CEO of Jahnsen Business Consulting & Corporate, told NGI’s Mexico GPI. “In Mexico, both the oil and natural gas sectors are deficient in these three areas.”

Rising demand for industrial park acreage in Mexico will require a sizable increase in power generation capacity, with natural gas-fired plants playing a starring role, industry leaders said during the Energy Associations Congress in Mexico City. 

Mexico’s transmission lines and electric power grid are insufficient to meet growing power demand across the country and require new investment, Edith Rojo Zazueta, an industrial engineer who worked previously at Mexico’s Comision Reguladora de Energia (CRE) told NGI’s Mexico GPI. 

The United States government could request a panel process by February to settle the ongoing energy dispute with Mexico over practices that are considered to be in violation of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada-Agreement, or USMCA.

Xóchitl Gálvez, a leading candidate in Mexico’s 2024 presidential elections, is seeking to prioritize the use of natural gas to advance the country’s energy transition and promote more private investment to develop necessary transportation infrastructure, she said in comments in Mexico City.
