What is a Market Hub?
Market hubs are pricing/trading locations that are served by at least two separate pipeline systems. Many larger hubs are also located near natural gas storage facilities. The Henry Hub in Erath, Louisiana is a prime example, and is the most widely known of the various gas hubs in the United States, since that is the physical delivery point for the NYMEX natural gas futures contract. The Henry Hub is served by 11 different pipeline systems, and has access to storage just a short distance away. Other major natural gas hubs in the U.S. include Agua Dulce, TX; Carthage, TX; Cheyenne, WY; Joliet, IL; Opal, WY; Perryville, LA; and Waha, TX.
