A shale play is composed of discovered (proved), undiscovered (probable) or possible gas and oil reserves that exhibit similar geological characteristics. These plays are within the geological depressionss, such as the Appalachian or Permian basins, and often contain a variety of accumulations, such as shale, carbonate and sand.
